CD126 is a type I plasma membrane glycoprotein of the hematopoietin receptor superfamily. It binds IL-6 and then associates with CD130 homodimers to form the functional IL-6 receptor. CD126 alone binds IL-6 with low affinity, and after association with CD130 with high affinity. It is expressed on normal B cells, T cells, monocytes, and hepatocytes, as well as on neoplastic (but not on normal) plasma cells. It is being used as an endothelial marker for separation of circulating endothelial cells from blood.
